What Size Canvas for Your Pet Portrait? A Simple Guide

Royal Pet Portrait, general military costume dog portrait made from photo, king with crown pet portrait

Your pet’s royal portrait comes as a canvas in four sizes: 8×10, 11×14, 12×16 and 18×24 inches. Which one is right depends less on the portrait than on the wall it’s going on. Here’s how to choose in five minutes, with a sheet of paper and some tape.

The four sizes at a glance

Size (inches)CentimetresWorks best
8 × 1020 × 25Desk, bookshelf, bedside table, part of a gallery wall
11 × 1428 × 36Hallway, bedroom, above a small console
12 × 1630 × 41Living room, above a side table, two pets
18 × 2446 × 61Above a sofa, bed or fireplace, three or more pets

Every product page has a size guide that draws all four sizes to scale above a sofa, with the measurements in centimetres.

8×10: small, personal, easy to place

The size of a large photo frame. It stands on a desk or shelf leaning against the wall, or hangs where space is tight. It’s the safe choice for a gift, because it fits anywhere, and a natural first piece of a gallery wall.

11×14 and 12×16: the everyday wall

Big enough to hold a wall on its own in a hallway, a bedroom or above a side table, small enough not to take over the room. If the portrait shows two pets, go for 12×16 so each face stays a good size.

18×24: the statement piece

For above the sofa, the bed or the fireplace, where the portrait is the first thing people see. It’s also the size for portraits of three or more pets. Above a long sofa, 18×24 still leaves plenty of wall on each side; it looks good centred on its own, or with a smaller canvas on either side.

Try it on the wall first

  • Cut a sheet of paper (or tape a few together) to the size you’re considering and tape it to the wall. Leave it there for a day; you’ll know quickly if it feels too small.
  • Hang it so the centre of the canvas is around 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor, roughly eye level, as galleries do.
  • Above furniture, leave a gap of 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) between the furniture and the bottom of the canvas.
  • Between two sizes? Go for the larger one. A portrait almost never looks too big once it’s up.
